Things to Do

The John Wornall House Museum was built in 1858 and is one of the few surviving homes of the Civil War era in Kansas City. It was initially used as a field hospital for the Battle of Westport and included original artifacts that belonged to the Wornall family in the 1800s. Take a tour of the property, learn all about life during the Civil War era in Kansas, and attend one of their excellent programs for children, like a middle school book club, storytimes in the barn, and Nursery Rhymes After Dark carnival activities.

Founded in 1991, the Leopold Gallery features hundreds of works of art from around the world and highlights special collections from Kansas City artists. The gallery is nationally ranked to build regional culture and assist beginning collections on their art journeys. Partnering with local charities for fundraisers, programs, and events, the Leopold Gallery is a staple of the Brookside and greater Kansas City neighborhoods and one of the most popular gathering places to experience the essence of community.

Held during the first weekend in May, the Brookside Art Annual has attracted thousands of visitors over the last 35 years to explore their creativity and connect with the community. With family-friendly activities, live music, hundreds of food vendors, and an extensive collection of artwork from all mediums, the Brookside Art Annual show is one of the most anticipated events of the year.

Fast-forward to winter and switch gears for the annual Holiday Season Opener, another favorite neighborhood event that celebrates the winter season. The Holiday Season Opener is the perfect time to showcase local businesses and start your holiday shopping. Enjoy concerts, pop-up events, and giveaways, and make room for hot chocolate and treats sponsored by The Roasterie Cafe.

One of the year's best events is the St Patrick’s Day Parade, a 40-year tradition for Brookside residents. The parade brings over 100 vendors from the greater Kansas City metro area to celebrate the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day with the entire community.
