In the 1820s, the area was reserved by the Shawnee tribe, with the Shawnee Methodist Mission built on the grounds in 1839. The neighborhood was eventually incorporated in 1949 and called “Fairway” because of the proximity to local golf courses and country clubs. The Indian Mission is preserved and features ongoing Indigenous experiences and educational materials for all ages. The Shawnee Indian Mission is dedicated to educating the surrounding community, and the nation, on Kansas City’s intricate history. This 12-acre historic landmark ensures the voices and stories of Native children and their families are accessible today and in the future.
